Help with Electronics in Europe
It's great to have the comforts of home while traveling to a foreign country. Bringing your own electronics and hair appliances can significantly improve your travel experience. Consider our tips about your electronics before packing.
You have three options of devices designed to help you operate personal electronics overseas:
Adapters
These devices allow your standard plug to fit into foreign wall outlets. Most are quite affordable, costing between $3 and $5 each. If you often travel, investing in a universal adapter kit might be a worthwhile consideration.
Dual-Voltage Appliances
Many small electronic devices are dual-voltage and can automatically adapt to the voltage of other countries. If your device's charger includes a manual switch, you will need to adjust it accordingly before using your appliance. To determine if your device can operate with 220-volt power without a converter, consult the manual or inspect the power cord.
Converters
A power converter enables the use of U.S. devices that are not dual-voltage. These converters typically range in price from $40 to $50. It's important to note that U.S. electronics that are not dual-voltage should never be operated in countries with a 220-volt system without using a converter. Phones, Laptops, Cameras & Video Cameras Most small digital devices have dual-voltage chargers that do not require a converter. Before leaving on your tour, you’ll want to check each device's manual or power cord to determine if it is dual voltage. If so, you must bring an adapter to plug the charger into the outlet.
Blow Dryers, Curling Irons & Straighteners
Many hotels offer hair dryers in each room. If you prefer to use your own hair appliances, it might be more cost-effective and convenient to purchase or borrow travel-friendly, dual-voltage appliances rather than investing in a converter—this is generally a cheaper and lighter alternative.
